Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
FOUNTAIN: the source from which something proceeds or is supplied
CISTERN: an artificial reservoir (such as an underground tank) for storing liquids and especially water (such as rainwater)
...they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters - God is our source of Living Waters. He is a reservoir of life for us. Are we going to Him for sustenance? Or are we trying to do it ourselves like those in this passage?
...that can hold no water - These people had decided to rely on their powers and ingenuity to sustain themselves. But, they are faulty human beings like we are today. They created cisterns to store up the water so they would not need to rely on God. Interesting point here, they still would need to rely on God for the rain to fill the cisterns. Yet, their cisterns were faulty and did not hold water.
Are we like this today where we turn our noses up to the provision of God and must "do it ourselves"? Even when we are trying to do it ourselves we are reliant on God for His provision. How much easier it would be to rely on God in the first place and do things His way!
