Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
FOUNTAIN: the source from which something proceeds or is supplied
CISTERN: an artificial reservoir (such as an underground tank) for storing liquids and especially water (such as rainwater)
...they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters - God is our source of Living Waters. Â He is a reservoir of life for us. Â Are we going to Him for sustenance? Â Or are we trying to do it ourselves like those in this passage?
...that can hold no water - These people had decided to rely on their powers and ingenuity to sustain themselves. Â But, they are faulty human beings like we are today. Â They created cisterns to store up the water so they would not need to rely on God. Â Interesting point here, they still would need to rely on God for the rain to fill the cisterns. Â Yet, their cisterns were faulty and did not hold water.
Are we like this today where we turn our noses up to the provision of God and must "do it ourselves"? Â Even when we are trying to do it ourselves we are reliant on God for His provision. Â How much easier it would be to rely on God in the first place and do things His way!
